Sony Ushers In New Era -- Will Others Follow?

Sony Steps To the Plate First to Offer Movies to Consumers Directly Through Internet-Enabled TV Ahead of DVD-Rental Release.  As Hollywood scrambles to find a way to recoup perceived losses in home-entertainment profits, Sony offers up a new experiment — sidestepping movie-rental companies to pitch a recent release directly to consumers via Internet-enabled TVs and Blu-ray players ahead of DVD-rental release. The studios have reluctantly avoided such a move in the past for fear of upsetting Wal-Mart, but with profits down as much as 25%, experimentation has become a necessity.
